Good people
There are so many good people in the world - I think everyone's first reaction is to feel sorry for them, trying to understand the tragedy of anyone who has lost someone. I was sitting at Starbucks the other morning with Steven, and he mentioned some unfortunate news story about death, destruction, etc. Then a woman next to us asked if we had heard about a local police officer who was gunned down and killed. "It's such a horrible world," she said - and without thinking I retorted back "no it's not". I think I caught her off guard, but it's not! There are so many good, strong, kind and generous people in the world - I'm fortunate to have surrounded myself with so many in Aiesec. But I feel like most people are trying to achieve the same thing - happiness, family, love. I believe it is the small minority of 'bad guys' who are causing fear, hurt and pain and are stealing the spotlight. I'm so frustrated by this right now.
I've recently found a complete disgust with the local media - before it was mild, but now I'm really upset. I've always tried to get an international perspective, since the US media is so skewed - but it hit me after the Egyptian ferry sank. 2 out of the 3 local news channels made that their third or fourth story - after things like, the weather or something stupid like that! "Thousands of people died - but it was 60 degress today in February!" Get a grip on what's important peeeeeeople...no wonder we're so US-centric. I worry this will never change, but hope it will.
